The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (DSWCD), in collaboration with the Nanton NHIS Authority, has organized a community outreach programme in Nanton aimed at improving access to healthcare for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district.
The exercise focused on educating PWDs on the benefits of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), emphasizing how enrollment and active membership enhance access to essential health services. Participants were taken through the scope of services covered under the scheme, the importance of keeping their NHIS status active, and the role of the scheme in reducing out-of-pocket health expenses.
In addition to the sensitization, the outreach provided on-the-spot registration and renewal of NHIS cards for eligible PWDs. This practical approach ensured that beneficiaries did not only receive information but were also supported to immediately act on it, eliminating common barriers such as travel cost and accessibility challenges.
The activity recorded active participation from beneficiaries, as captured in photographs from the event, which show PWDs engaging with officers from both the DSWCD and the NHIS Authority throughout the education and renewal process.
This intervention forms part of the District’s broader social protection mandate to promote inclusion and equitable access to basic services, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development has indicated that the exercise will be extended to all 20 electoral areas within the Nanton District to ensure that no eligible PWD is left out.
The Nanton District Assembly remains committed to strengthening partnerships with relevant agencies to improve the welfare, dignity, and quality of life of Persons with Disabilities across the district.
