Access to quality healthcare remains a key pillar of community development, especially for vulnerable groups such as Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). In line with this, a sensitization and outreach session was recently held at Tampion, aimed at strengthening health awareness and improving access to essential healthcare services.
The engagement focused primarily on educating community members on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Participants were taken through the importance of enrolling on the scheme, the benefits it provides, and how to effectively use the NHIS card when accessing healthcare. A special emphasis was placed on on-the-spot renewal of expired health insurance cards, ensuring that PWDs do not face barriers when seeking medical attention.
Beyond health insurance, the session also addressed personal hygiene practices. Facilitators discussed simple but critical habits such as regular handwashing, proper sanitation, safe water usage, and environmental cleanliness. These practices were highlighted as first lines of defense against common preventable diseases.
Another key component of the program was home-based care for PWDs. Caregivers and family members were guided on basic care techniques, including hygiene support, nutrition, mobility assistance, and early identification of health complications. This segment reinforced the idea that quality care does not only happen in hospitals but begins within the home.
Overall, the Tampion sensitization session played a vital role in empowering PWDs and their caregivers with practical health knowledge. By combining NHIS education, hygiene awareness, and caregiving skills, the initiative contributed to improved health outcomes, increased healthcare access, and stronger community support systems.
Such community-driven interventions remain essential in bridging the gap between health services and vulnerable populations, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of better health and wellbeing.
