Access to reliable communication networks remains a key driver of economic growth, education, and social development. In line with Ghana’s national digital inclusion agenda, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has taken another step toward expanding connectivity in rural communities.

Recently, officials from GIFEC held a meeting with the chief and assembly member of Dohi, a community within the Nanton District Assembly. The engagement followed an earlier briefing with the District Chief Executive (DCE) and the District Coordinating Director (DCD), where plans were discussed to establish telecommunication infrastructure that will serve the community.

A Step Toward Digital Inclusion

The proposed project forms part of a broader government initiative aimed at improving network connectivity in underserved communities across Ghana. By extending telecommunications infrastructure to Dohi, residents will gain access to more reliable mobile network services and digital communication tools.

For many rural communities, poor connectivity has long limited opportunities in areas such as education, healthcare access, digital services, and local commerce. With improved network coverage, residents will be better positioned to participate in Ghana’s growing digital economy.

Engaging Traditional and Local Authorities

Community engagement is a critical component of infrastructure development, particularly in rural areas. During the meeting, GIFEC representatives met with the traditional leadership and the assembly member to discuss the initiative, explain the project’s benefits, and ensure the community’s support.

Local leadership plays an important role in facilitating such projects by helping coordinate land access, community awareness, and cooperation throughout the implementation process.

Expected Benefits for the Community

The planned telecommunication infrastructure is expected to bring several advantages to Dohi and its surrounding communities:

  • Improved mobile network coverage
  • Better access to digital services and information
  • Enhanced opportunities for education and remote learning
  • Improved communication for businesses and traders
  • Strengthened access to emergency and government services

Strengthening Ghana’s Digital Future

Through initiatives led by GIFEC and collaboration with district assemblies and community leaders, the government continues to push toward closing the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

The engagement with Dohi’s leadership marks an important step toward bringing modern communication infrastructure to the community. Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and open new opportunities for residents.

As Ghana continues to invest in digital infrastructure, communities like Dohi stand to benefit from stronger connections to the rest of the country—and the world.
