The exercise seeks to strengthen disability data management, improve inclusive planning, and ensure that Persons with Disabilities receive targeted support based on accurate and up-to-date information.

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (DSWCD) of the Nanton District Assembly has intensified efforts to improve disability data management through an ongoing exercise to update the District Disability Album, which commenced on 14th September 2026.

As part of the exercise, officers of the Department visited the Savelugu School for the Deaf on Wednesday, 21st October 2026, to collect and verify data on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from the Nanton District who attend the school.

The visit forms part of the Department’s broader commitment to promoting the welfare, inclusion, and empowerment of PWDs by ensuring that individuals who receive education outside the district are adequately captured in the district’s disability database.

Updating Disability Records for Effective Service Delivery

The ongoing data collection exercise seeks to review existing profiles of PWDs in the district, verify personal information, identify changes in individual circumstances, update records, and register eligible persons who may have been excluded from the initial registration.

Through this process, the Department aims to ensure that the District Disability Album contains accurate, reliable, and current information that reflects the needs and circumstances of PWDs across the district.

The visit to the Savelugu School for the Deaf is particularly important in ensuring that students from Nanton who attend educational institutions outside the district are not overlooked in disability-related planning and support programs.

By extending data collection beyond the district’s geographical boundaries, the Department is working to promote a more comprehensive and inclusive database that captures eligible PWDs wherever they may be receiving education or other services.

Supporting Evidence-Based Planning and Resource Allocation

The updated District Disability Album will serve as an important reference document for needs assessment, program planning, resource allocation, and the delivery of targeted interventions for PWDs.

Accurate disability data will help the District Assembly and relevant stakeholders better understand the number of PWDs in the district, their individual circumstances, and the support services they may require.

The information will also support the District Disability Fund Management Committee (DFMC) in making informed decisions regarding disability-related interventions and the allocation of available resources.

With reliable records, the Committee will be better positioned to identify beneficiaries, assess support needs, promote transparency in the distribution of assistance, and minimize duplication of benefits.

Promoting Inclusion and Equal Access to Support

The exercise reflects the Department’s commitment to ensuring that PWDs are recognized and considered in district development planning and social protection initiatives.

Maintaining an accurate disability database is essential to ensuring that eligible individuals are not inadvertently excluded from relevant programs because of incomplete, outdated, or missing records.

The exercise also reinforces the importance of collaboration between the District Assembly, educational institutions, families, and other stakeholders in identifying and responding to the needs of PWDs.

By verifying records and capturing eligible individuals who were previously omitted, the Department seeks to strengthen the foundation for more equitable access to support services and disability-related interventions.

Commitment to Improved Disability Data Management

The ongoing update of the District Disability Album demonstrates the Nanton District Assembly’s continued commitment, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, to strengthening disability data management and promoting the inclusion and empowerment of PWDs.

The Department remains focused on ensuring that interventions are informed by accurate information and the actual needs of beneficiaries.

Ultimately, the updated album is expected to contribute to more inclusive district planning, better-informed resource allocation, improved social protection, and enhanced access to support services for PWDs in the Nanton District.
