As part of my routine home and farm visits as an Agricultural Extension Agent (AEA), I visited Afa Ali’s farm in the Zieng Operational Area to monitor crop performance and provide technical guidance to improve productivity and yields.
A few months ago, during an earlier farm visit, Afa Ali shared his interest in Ginger production after observing how much his wife spent purchasing ginger from the market. He saw an opportunity to turn this recurring household expense into a potential source of income by producing ginger himself.
Recognising his enthusiasm, I provided him with practical guidance on ginger production and encouraged him to pursue his vision. Since then, Afa Ali has remained committed to learning, regularly contacting me by phone to seek further technical advice. I also visit his farm every two weeks to monitor progress, address challenges and encourage him along the way.
During today’s visit, I was impressed by the progress of his ginger farm and his determination to take the enterprise to the next level. Encouraged by the crop’s performance, he has expressed a strong desire to expand production in the coming seasons.
However, turning this promising initiative into a sustainable and commercially viable enterprise may require additional support. Access to quality planting materials, appropriate production inputs, technical assistance and market linkages could help Afa Ali expand production, improve yields and increase his income.
His journey demonstrates what can be achieved when a farmer’s initiative is matched with consistent extension support. It also presents an opportunity for development partners, agricultural institutions and other stakeholders to support emerging farmers who are willing to innovate, learn and invest in new agricultural ventures.
Afa Ali has the interest, commitment and willingness to grow. With the right support, his small ginger farm could become a model for crop diversification, income generation and improved rural livelihoods in the Zieng Operational Area.
