The Nanton District Assembly, under the dynamic leadership of Hon. Rosina, the District Chief Executive, in collaboration with development partners, marked this year’s International Day for the Girl Child with a colorful and impactful celebration at Nanton Senior High School.

The event drew a cross-section of stakeholders — government officials, traditional authorities, development partners, educators, students, and community groups — united by a shared commitment to advancing girls’ rights and leadership within the district.

Driving Change: Girls at the Heart of Crisis Response

The global theme for 2025, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontline of Crisis,” resonated deeply with participants. Discussions centered on how girls are shaping solutions amid challenges such as poverty, gender-based violence, climate stress, and limited access to education and healthcare.

The celebration emphasized that empowering girls isn’t just a moral responsibility — it’s a strategic investment in the resilience and future of communities.

Highlights of the Celebration

1. Opening Session

The day began with registration and prayers, followed by the introduction of dignitaries. The Chief of Nanton, who chaired the occasion, commended the Assembly and its partners for prioritizing girl-child development and called for community-wide support to sustain the effort.

2. Official Addresses

Speeches from the District Chief Executive, District Coordinating Director, development partners (Plan International Ghana, ActionAid Ghana), and other dignitaries underscored the importance of education, leadership, and equal opportunity for every girl. The DCE reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing gender equity across the district.

3. Cultural and Poetic Displays

Nanton SHS’s cultural troupe thrilled the audience with traditional performances, while a poetic recital powerfully portrayed the struggles and triumphs of girls rising above adversity.

4. Health and Education Talks

Practical sessions tackled vital topics including menstrual hygiene, breast cancer awareness, re-entry for teen mothers, and substance abuse prevention. These sessions, led by health professionals and social workers, equipped participants with life-changing information.

5. Support and Empowerment Initiatives

In a show of leadership and compassion, Hon. Rosina distributed sanitary pads to adolescent girls and presented GH₵39,684.00 in financial assistance to 16 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the District Disability Fund — reinforcing inclusivity and social protection.

Key Outcomes

  • Heightened awareness of girls’ rights and health issues across schools and communities.
  • Stronger collaboration among the Assembly, schools, NGOs, and traditional authorities.
  • Renewed motivation among girls to take up leadership and advocacy roles.
  • Tangible financial and material support provided to vulnerable populations.

Challenges and Way Forward

While the event was a resounding success, the Assembly identified key challenges including limited time for all activities and inadequate resources to reach more communities.

To address these, the Assembly recommended:

  • Establishing follow-up mentorship programs for girls.
  • Strengthening coordination with development partners.
  • Expanding budgetary support for gender programs.
  • Including boys and male role models in gender equality campaigns.

Commitment to the Future

The Nanton District Assembly remains steadfast in its mission to empower every girl to realize her potential and lead change within her community. The Assembly extends appreciation to all partners, stakeholders, and participants who contributed to the success of the 2025 International Day for the Girl Child celebration.

Together, the district moves forward — building a future where every girl is educated, empowered, and equipped to lead.
