The Nanton District Assembly, in collaboration with ENI, has begun a comprehensive Ghana Baseline Survey on household fuel consumption to better understand how families across the district cook and the energy sources they rely on.

The baseline survey, conducted last week, focused on key issues affecting everyday household life: the type of cooking fuel used (firewood, charcoal, and related sources) and the kinds of cookstoves in operation, including traditional cookstoves. This initial phase provided critical data on current practices, energy efficiency, and potential health and environmental impacts within communities across the district.

Building on the baseline findings, the exercise has progressed this week into the Kitchen Performance Test (KPT) phase. The KPT is a more practical, household-level assessment designed to measure real-life fuel consumption and cooking efficiency over a defined period. It moves beyond interviews and observation to capture how much fuel is actually used during daily cooking activities.

For this phase, approximately 20 households were initially selected from each of the various communities covered in the survey, as shown in the baseline records. From these, 16 households per community are being finalized for the KPT, in line with standard testing requirements. This ensures consistency, accuracy, and comparability of results across all participating communities.

The communities involved represent a wide cross-section of the Nanton District, allowing the study to reflect both rural and peri-urban cooking practices. By applying the same KPT standards across all locations, the District Assembly and ENI aim to generate reliable evidence that can guide future interventions.

The outcomes of this exercise will directly support:

  • Improved planning for clean and efficient cooking solutions
  • Policy and programme design on sustainable energy use
  • Reduction of health risks associated with smoke from traditional cooking methods
  • Environmental protection through reduced pressure on firewood resources

The Nanton District Assembly remains committed to partnerships that deliver practical development outcomes. This collaboration with ENI is a strategic step toward data-driven decision-making and long-term improvements in household energy use and livelihoods across the district.

Further updates will be shared as the Kitchen Performance Test progresses and results are analyzed.
